The Benefits of Medicinal Plants Used in Traditional Medicine in Gam Ici Village, Ibu District, West Halmahera Regency

Abstract


This study aims to identify useful plant species and analyze their cultural importance based on the Index of Cultural Significance (ICS) value within the local community. Useful plants play a vital role in community life, particularly as sources of traditional medicine passed down through generations. The study employs a descriptive-qualitative method with an ethnobotanical approach. Data collection involved field observations, interviews with informants knowledgeable about plant utilization, and documentation of the plant species used by the community. The data were analyzed using the Index of Cultural Significance (ICS) method to determine the level of importance of each plant species based on the quality of utilization, intensity of use, and exclusivity of use. The analysis revealed plant species with ICS values of 30. 20,8. 20.8  and 18.72. These values indicate varying levels of cultural importance among the plant species utilized by the community. Plants with the highest ICS values possess greater cultural significance according to the assessment criteria applied.
