A Historical-Critical Study of the Role of Parents as Educators of Children in Psalm 127:15

Abstract

This study aims to examine, from a historical-critical perspective, the role of parents as educators of children based on Psalm 127:15. The study is motivated by the importance of the family as the primary institution for shaping childrens faith, character, and social life, as well as the various challenges faced by parents in the context of modern society. The method employed is a historical-critical approach through etymological analysis, examination of the social and cultural context of the Ancient Near East, textual criticism, redaction criticism, form criticism, Sitz im Leben, and verse-by-verse interpretation of Psalm 127:15. The findings indicate that Psalm 127 is a wisdom psalm that emphasizes human dependence on YHWH in all aspects of life, including work, security, and family. Children are described as a heritage from the LORD and a reward from Him, indicating that the existence of children is not merely the result of human effort but rather a divine gift and trust. The image of children as arrows in the hand of a warrior emphasizes their value as the next generation, who play an important role in preserving the continuity, honor, and well-being of the family. In this context, parents serve not only as providers of life and caregivers for their childrens needs but also as educators responsible for shaping their childrens character, faith, and readiness to face life. This study further demonstrates that the message of Psalm 127 remains relevant to Christian families today.
