Abstract

This study examines problem-based learning (PBL) as an innovative approach to improving the quality of learning in the modern era. The article employs a literature review method with a qualitative approach to analyze the concept, characteristics, syntax, strengths and weaknesses, and implementation of PBL. Problem-based learning is a strategy that uses real-world problems as a learning context to develop students’ critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and independent learning. The main characteristics of PBL include the use of authentic problems as a starting point, student-centered learning, collaboration, and the encouragement of self-directed learning. The PBL syntax consists of five stages: orienting students to the problem, organizing students for learning, guiding investigation, developing and presenting work, and analyzing and evaluating the problem-solving process. Observations at SMPN 3 Satap Balocci show that the implementation of PBL in the material on sujud sahwi, recitation (tilawah), and gratitude (syukur) is quite effective in improving students’ understanding compared to conventional learning. Although it requires more time and thorough preparation, PBL has proven to enhance learning motivation, critical thinking skills, and students’ knowledge retention.
