The Church as a Symbol of God’s Power in Martin Luther’s Christocentric Ecclesiology: A Systematic Theological Study of Contextual Christocentric Ecclesiology

Abstract

This study examines the church as a symbol of God’s authority from the perspective of Martin Luther’s Christocentric ecclesiology and its relevance for contemporary church life, particularly in the context of the ministry of the Huria Kristen Batak Protestan (HKBP). The research employs a qualitative method through literature study. The study finds that understanding the church as a symbol of God’s authority does not mean that the church becomes an instrument of political domination or institutional power. God’s authority is manifested soteriologically through Christ as the Head of the Church, through the proclamation of the Word, the administration of the sacraments, the forgiveness of sins, the renewal of life, and the work of the Holy Spirit. In Luther’s thought, the church is communio sanctorum and creatura Verbi: the communion of saints that is created, sustained, and continually renewed through the Gospel. Consequently, ecclesial authority must remain subject to Christ and His Word, while church leadership is understood as ministerium, a vocation of service rather than domination. The contextualization of the church must therefore preserve Christ as its center while communicating the Gospel faithfully and relevantly in relation to poverty, plurality, justice, peace, and the integrity of creation. The church becomes a sign of God’s reign when its identity, doctrine, leadership, and mission are centered on Christ and embodied in faithfulness to the Gospel and ministries of love.
