Praktik Rentenir dan Respons Sosial-Pastoral Gereja: Studi Kasus Jemaat HKBP Tebing Tinggi

Abstract

This study examines the churchs attitude toward the practice of charging excessively high interest on loans, as practiced by some members of the Huria Kristen Batak Protestan (HKBP) at HKBP Tebing Tinggi, Tebing Tinggi Resort. The practice of usury or moneylending at excessive interest rates is a socio-economic phenomenon that remains prevalent in society, including among church members. Such practices are contrary to Christian ethical values and the teaching of mutual support found in Galatians 6:2. This study employs a qualitative method with a descriptive approach, using a literature review of HKBP theological documents and in-depth interviews with church leaders. The findings indicate that the church has not yet firmly implemented the Ruhut Parmahanion Paminsangon (RPP) HKBP, Part III, Point 7, which regulates violations of the Eighth Commandment concerning theft. The lack of socialization and understanding among church members regarding the contents of the RPP constitutes the main obstacle to the implementation of church disciplinary measures. This study recommends that the church take a more proactive role in providing Christian education, pastoral guidance, and consistent implementation of the RPP based on the principles of love and restoration, rather than using it merely as an instrument of punishment.
