Abstract

This study aims to improve students’ learning interest in Islamic Religious Education and Character  by applying the Crossword Puzzle method, particularly in the topic living a meaningful life by avoiding extravagance, showing off (riya), seeking fame (sum’ah), arrogance, and envy (hasad). This research employed Classroom Action Research  conducted at SMA Plus Ar-Raudhah with Grade X students as the subjects. The research was carried out in two cycles, each consisting of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection stages. Data were collected through learning interest questionnaires, observation sheets, and documentation, then analyzed using descriptive quantitative and qualitative approaches. The results revealed that the initial learning process using the lecture method led to low student learning interest. After implementing the Crossword Puzzle method in the first cycle, students’ learning interest began to improve, although not evenly distributed. In the second cycle, improvements such as more varied puzzles and group work activities significantly increased nearly all indicators of learning interest, including attendance, attention, activeness, note-taking, task completion, and enthusiasm. Therefore, the Crossword Puzzle method is proven to be an effective alternative strategy in teaching PAI & BP to enhance students’ learning interest.
